Shopping at Five Seed without Etsy or Paypal

I love selling on Etsy – it’s a great forum for small business owners like me who can’t afford the fees of a major shopping cart provider or merchant system. The one flaw, however, is that buyers have to have an Etsy account AND a PayPal account. I know this has kept some people from purchasing from Five Seed and I’ve spent the last couple of months trying to figure out a way to make FS products more available to those who don’t want to sign up with Etsy and/or with PayPal.

I am currently experimenting with a PayPal shopping cart on a Blogger page. The cart is provided by PayPal, but you do NOT have to have a PayPal account to buy! Just your credit card. It seems pretty simple and straightforward as far as I can tell.

I’ve set up the page with an Etsy widget on the left which serves two purposes. It is there for those who DO want to order via Etsy, but also there to show pictures and links to descriptions of the items. On the right are three drop-down menus that allow you to buy via the independent shopping cart. Again, if you use the drop-down menus, you do NOT have to have a PayPal account, even though the shopping cart is provided by PayPal. When you go to check out, it asks you to sign into your PayPal account OR click below it if you don’t have an account and just want to use your credit card.

At this time, the independent shopping cart is only available for US customers and I’m only offering items that are packaged in tins at this point. Each item will ship out via Priority Mail, and shipping will not exceed $5 unless you order more than can fit into the flat rate box, at which point, you will be notified so we can find the cheapest, fastest solution for you.

Much of this will change, however, as I continue to design the site and work through the kinks. I will likely only ship to US addresses with the independent shopping cart, as it is easier to control. Eventually, I may offer different shipping options, as well. And of course, I’ll be offering more (hopefully all) of the product line so that those who don’t have PayPal/Etsy accounts can still have access to the full Five Seed line.

If you are interested in using this shopping cart this week, please leave the code TURKEY10 in the Message to Five Seed box. This cart doesn’t offer an automatic discount with coupon codes, but I will refund the discount amount to you after the purchase has been finalized. You can use this code through December 5, 2010.

If you are interested in seeing the new shopping option, click here! It’s pretty bare bones right now, but I’ll be working on it over time. Please let me know your ideas and suggestions – if you find it confusing, let me know!

Seven Minute Showers…Getting There!

How dirty have you gotten this month? More than usual? If so, pat yourself on the bath. You’ll know you’ve really gotten down and dirty when letting yourself get a little dirty doesn’t freak you out! :)

I intended to write more updates on this little challenge but I always forget how busy November is! Plus, with the cold weather, I know people don’t like to cut back their delectable hot showers – myself included! So if I do this again next year, spring would probably be better. April or May, maybe.

Anyway, I’ve slacked a bit but haven’t given up. I have easily kept up my every-third-day shower routine. That has been so easy that I think I’m going to continue that throughout the winter months. Even though going from every other day to every third day isn’t cutting my showers in half, it’s still a significant decrease.

As for actually cutting my shower time in half – that has been more of a challenge! My first timed shower was 12 minutes, making my goal 6 minutes. I have yet to achieve that, though most of my showers since then have been 7 minutes – pretty close! There were two days when I was so cold that I lingered…and lingered…and lingered. Those showers ended up being 13 and 15 minutes long! Whoops! But I’m not concerned. This is just a fun challenge and I’m still doing well and trying my best.

Ultimately, this challenge is just for fun. It isn’t that easy, of course – most of us love our long, hot showers! But it is supposed to challenge your perception of “clean.” My goal for all of you participants out there was to get people to shower every other day. Some of you already are doing that, which is why I added the option of shortening your shower. But many people can’t fathom showering every other day – and honestly, it’s not so bad and extremely liberating. That’s really what inspired this challenge, and I hope some of you tried getting dirtier and found it to be less scary than you thought! LOL.

I’ll be writing a wrap-up post on this challenge next week and I would LOVE to hear from some of you. If you want to drop me a line at five5seed@gmail.com or on my Facebook fan page, I would love it. Let me know what your goal was for this challenge and whether or not you met it. Maybe let us know your emotional response to letting go of your perception of “clean,” too.

Until then, have a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving for you American readers!

Shop Owners Unite!

Happy Veteran’s Day to you all and thank you to all who have served.

I’m writing this post as a request for some help in collecting some donations for the Oregon Army National Guard. They are hosting a silent auction to help pay for the annual Officer Candidate Class Dining Out event. They are looking for anything that can be auctioned off. Some ideas:

::Movie tickets

::Gift certificates

::A free round of golf at an Oregon course

::Merchandise

If you are a shop owner or an Oregon business owner, please consider donating something to this auction. I’ll be putting together some items from my shop for the cause. Remember, it doesn’t matter if it is just one little item – donated merchandise will be combined in some cases to make an auction item of higher value.

If you have questions or want to get involved, you can contact me and I’ll send you more information or contact the Oregon Army National Guard:

Attn: President, OCS Class 54

Please consider donating something, or passing on this request to other business owners. Thank you so much!

A Monday Update

I’ve been meaning to put together a quick update, but have yet to get to it until today! I wanted to let you know what’s going on at the store…

::Lip balm updates

Some of you may have been around for the whole debate about whether or not I should include the compostable lip balm tubes in my line. As you know, I did end up purchasing a box of them as an experiment and have been disappointed – though not for any fault of the tubes! I have found that my current lip balm recipe (one developed over two months of testing) is too soft in the tubes! (There is enough mass in the tins to keep them hard, but in the small, thin tubes, they are way too soft.) This is why I am offering them at 20% off and will continue to do so until they are sold out. I would give them away if I could afford it, but the tubes are actually more expensive to buy than the tins, so on sale it must be! :) (And please be assured that this is a purely aesthetic problem – the balms still work perfectly.)

I’ve also been dissatisfied with the “look” of the tubes. I don’t like the pattern (the only one you can buy without having them printed by Eco Vision), and have found out why they offer printing in the first place – because the tubes are slick and do not grip the adhesive side of the sticker labels! Ack!

The truth is, I’ve been very discouraged with the way my lip balms have been turning out. As far as the tubes go, I have decided that until I can afford to have them professionally printed, I’m going to have to let them sell out and just keep on offering the tins.

As for the lip balms I have now, I’m seriously debating what to keep and what to scrap. My Chocolate Mint Lip Balm seems to be a favorite, though I did not plan on continuing to offer that (for the simple reason that EVERY bath and body shop offers a chocolate mint lip balm). However, I’m reconsidering my decision on that and may (perhaps) restock the Chocolate Mint.

The Vanilla Woods lip balm became a fast favorite, but I have had nothing but trouble keeping those balms consistent and smooth. Each batch seems to turn out vastly different (which doesn’t usually happen), and too often, the cocoa butter clumps up, making the lip balm grainy. You may have noticed that Vanilla Woods is currently not in stock and that’s because I pulled them until I can figure out what’s going on. (If you don’t mind the clumpiness and are planning on making an order soon, leave me a note with your order stating that you’d like one and I’ll throw it in for free while supplies last.)

Finally, my other lip balms, while lovely, aren’t totally, wholly, completely satisfying to me. Lip balms are difficult in many aspects – for one thing, it’s hard to develop a unique, reliable, consistent recipe without using chemical stabilizers. It’s also hard to find unique lip balm blends. This is something that I’m still working on, eleven months later.

The bottom line is that I want to sell the best of the best. This is really hard when you are on a tight budget, but I feel I have put the money and quality where it counts the most – in the ingredients, in the products, themselves. My packaging isn’t always as pretty or perfect as others, but I’ll get there someday. But my lip balms….now is the time for me to pull back and get it just right before going any further. A friend who has been around since the beginning of Five Seed told me she still has my original lip balm that I sold back in January and that it is the most perfect of all the lip balms of mine that she’s tried. I told her I also still have a tin of that same batch and mine is still perfect, too. Hmmm…maybe I got it right back in the beginning. The problem is that that recipe is not vegan (and people have been begging me for vegan lip balms), and that I don’t want to have to always use cocoa butter in recipes, as the scent is too strong to blend with certain other scents.

To make a long story longer, I’m going back to the drawing board on lip balms! Please bear with me – I’ll get there! And just know that I don’t know what I intend to do with the current line. Once it is sold out, I may decide not to restock those same scent blends. So if you really liked the Wild Patchouli or Sweet Rosemary, grab ‘em while you can.

::Coconut Vanilla Bean Balm

Over the summer, I had a few odds and ends of different ingredients laying about and thought I’d try an experimental recipe. Like another experiment (Rose Hip Calendula Balm) I never intended to restock this item. I figured it may or may not sell, and afterwards, I’d discontinue it. Again, like the aforementioned Rose Hip Calendula Balm, this experiment was wildly popular – every single person who bought it has written me to ask me to make more! So….rest assured, I will have it back in stock within a week or so.

::New Herbal Aromatherapy Perfume recipe!

Some of you may remember that a concerned customer wanted to know if it was safe for the environment to harvest castor oil, and if not, if I’d be willing to cut it from my line. You can read about that here. I have thought a lot about this and though I am confident that my supplier is ethical, I thought it might be prudent to cut back on castor oil in my products – just in case. I hardly ever use it, but it is a major component in the Herbal Aromatherapy Perfumes. I have recently made a new batch of Sveva using a new, castor oil-free recipe, but….will people like it as much? In order to find out, I’ll be offering the next batch of Sveva at a discount – all I ask is that you drop me a line and let me know how you like the new recipe. I’ll let you know when Sveva is back in the shop.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something here, but hopefully, that will cover things until my next update. I do have more skin care posts in store for you – some of them are a bit time-consuming to write, though. I’ll try to get to them soon. Other than that, I’ll be working on lip balms and some new perfumes this week.

Have a wonderful second week of November!

Cutting My Shower in Half

I have a confession to make: I have never timed myself in the shower before, despite the fact that I have recommended that people do this anytime I write about greening one’s beauty routine. Yep. I haven’t walked the walk on that one.

Why not? For the simple reason that showers are one of my greatest pleasures in life. Who doesn’t love standing under the scalding hot spray of the shower head? Especially in winter? It is so relaxing and everything just melts away. I figure since I only shower every second or third day, I shouldn’t have to feel too guilty for taking long showers, right?

Well, maybe, maybe not. The fact is, I was afraid that my showers were averaging 20 minutes. And I was too afraid to find out if that was true or not, because if it turned out to be a correct estimation, then I knew I’d have to, in good conscience, cut way back!

So today, I did it. I brought in my timer and set it for 30 minutes, just to see how long my shower would take. I didn’t try to hurry at all – I wanted an accurate picture of how long my average showers are. And I’m slightly relieved to report that my shower today was 12 minutes long. Yeah, that’s a long shower in general, using, at minimum, 30 gallons of water. But it wasn’t 20 minutes, so I considered it a small victory.

For the rest of the month, however, I am now committed to taking 6 minute showers. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, because I’m sure there are plenty of people who already DO take 6 minute showers! :) But here it is – I’m a slowly reforming shower glutton.

Hope you are all doing well on your 50% Dirtier Challenge goals!

Getting Dirtier

I’m very excited about the feedback I’ve gotten on the 50% Dirtier Challenge. I honestly didn’t expect anyone to sign up, LOL!

I’ve got about 6 or 7 people joining me this month – and you can enter at any time, so join in if you are just reading this now.

As you may have read, I’m committing to showering every third day (instead of every other day) for the month of November, but since that isn’t 50% less showering than I normally do, I’ll be actually cutting back my actual shower time by half. My first shower of November will be tomorrow – I’ll be getting my timer out! (It feels weird to talk about my showers in public….hmmmm….)

And as promised, here is the button for the challenge. Feel free to post it on your blog and spread the word!

UPDATE: I’m having a heck of a time getting this button code to work, so if it doesn’t work, after all my struggles, go ahead and just copy/paste it and please link it to the following URL: http://fiveseed.wordpress.com/2010/10/31/the-50-dirtier-challenge/
