The 50% Dirtier Challenge

First of all, let me apologize for not printing this sooner – and say Happy Halloween, as well!

I have been wanting to do some challenges on this blog for a while now, but never followed through because I know with my tiny blog, I will be lucky to get one person to join me, LOL. But…what the heck! Why not?

I have been talking to people about showering a lot lately – it is just one of those subjects that seems to come up a lot. There have been so many conversations about the American proclivity for taking two showers a day. In fact, I even ran across this article recently about Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey showering twice a day (under not one, but TWO shower heads). Now I know two people who are entertainers have no need to shower that often. Even Jennifer Aniston supposedly only showers for three minutes in order to conserve our resources.

So here it is – we are entering November, a cold month, in which most of us won’t be sweating that much (presumably). I’m not going to propose specific numbers here – just a percentage. Though, admittedly, a large one. Fifty percent. Yep, fifty percent less. If you shower twice a day, then cut back to once a day. If you shower daily, cut back to every other day. Believe me, this isn’t as hard as you may think. If you are cutting back to showering once a day, you won’t even notice the difference. If you are cutting back to once every other day, you will barely notice. Just use a little dry shampoo if your hair feels dirty and feel free to do a little soapy action with a washcloth in certain areas (like the armpits, crotch and feet) that you want to stay fresh.

If this is way too far past your comfort zone, then you have one other option. Time your next shower, and for the rest of the month, commit to finishing each shower in half the time. Fifty percent less time in the shower if you can’t fathom taking 50% fewer showers.

Are you in? If so, please sign up here in the comments by stating your 50% less showering goal. I’ll do a couple updates over the month – even if no one signs up, LOL! And if you just see this post a week or two into November, you can still sign up – go for it! Even if you are only involved for a week, please join in.

As for me, I already only shower every other day, and since I have yet to have success showering every FOURTH day (even I have some limits!), I’m showering every third day. But I do intend to cut my shower time in half, as I tend to take very long showers.

If you decide to join in, please remember to compare November’s water bill to your previous bill to see how much less water you used. You may not save much money (water is cheap), but you might be surprised at how much water you can save by simply showering less. Also, take note of how much more time you have on mornings you don’t shower – you may not want to go back to your old routine!

So come on! Join in!

  1. I am already pretty grubby. :) We share a bath between the three of us; most days our small girl (who will be two and a half on December 1) does need a rather good wash-down, but we only wash hair about every four days, and one bath between three, by my reckoning, is probably within spitting distance of three showers. Since the small girl has been a bit older, too, we’ve found she is becoming increasingly flexible with her expectations of what bedtime holds; this has meant missing the odd bath here and there, which, oddly, is quite freeing. I love baths, but it’s also nice to… not. Anyway, good post, good idea, and yes, count me in.

  2. Ok, I’m in! I will commit to taking shorter showers this month! (One shower per day.) I may be guilty of shaving in the shower quite often, so I’ll put some water in the sink this month instead. Our water bill comes every 3-4 months, so I won’t notice a change in the bill for a while. Great challenge idea!

  3. I definitely shouldn’t take 50% less showers because I already don’t shower every day, but I think you’re right that I should time my showers and try to shorten them. It will be hard especially now that the cold weather is here and I never want to leave my steamy shower but I will give it a try.

    • @Julia: LOL – that’s what I said to myself, too! I thought: I don’t want to push it here! ;) But yeah, like you, I want to try shorter showers. It will definitely be hard for me – the colder it is, the more I want to linger in the steam!

  4. i’m a twice a week girl – basically my hair tells me when and i keep the soapy washcloth around for the pits like you mentioned. a former roommate of mine would shower sometimes twice in the day during the summer, it made me nuts! only thing about the water bill though, in pdx at least, is the cost only goes down if you reduce by 740 gal (a unit) so it takes a lot to make the bill go down – we’re lucky though here in pdx where the water is so inexpensive and clean :)

    • @EcoGrrl: Same goes here for the water. I’ll probably change that line – water is really cheap. I wanted to give people something they could look at and see a difference, but really, just looking at the amount of water used (hopefully less) will be equally satisfying!

  5. Wonderful challenge! Love the name, too…no sugar coating it :) I don’t shower on the weekends but since my job is farming I do shower during the week. I am guilty of taking toooo long and using my evening shower as a way to relax, so I will definitely be participating by decreasing the length by half.

  6. I LOVE this challenge! Working from home makes this easy- especially if I have stretches of days that are client/class free. I have trained my hair to only need washing every 7-9 days. I think I can go a little dirtier.

    • @Meghan: I agree – the home-employment helps! There are plenty of days when I realize no one will care what i look like! LOL. I’m totally jealous that you can go that long without washing your hair, though. I’ve tried 6 days, and it wasn’t pleasant! So far, it’s every third day…but I keep pushing, and figure someday, I could make it to at least every 5 days.

  7. I will commit to less time in the shower. I used to take ridiculously long showers and have cut that by 2/3′s. But I will challenge myself to cut that in half this month :) What an awesome idea. You should create a button or banner so we can put it on our websites/blogs :)

  8. Fabulous idea for a challenge…I’ve been trying to find even more ways to do my part, and lo and behold I find your newsletter in my inbox. I am guilty of the full-bath relaxing time about once a week, in addition to a shower every other day or so, so I will commit to a shower every third day and *gasp* no relaxing baths full of gallons of water. Maybe I’ll spend the time reading instead.
Thanks again for the great challenge, and I’ll be sure to pass it along on my blog!

    • @Terra: Yay! I’m so glad to have you join in! I love a good bath, too, though I haven’t taken one in a year. And just cuz I’m too lazy to properly scrub out the tub! LOL.

  9. this is a fantastic challenge. I know a few people who shower twice a day…..

I have tried shaving outside of the shower- it’s not too bad (I stand over the tub with a towel and turn on the water to soap up only.) only gets tricky when it’s cold… :S

I think I’m going to time my showers and see how long they are. I doubt I’ll be able to cut them in half, honestly- but I will try my darndest!

  10. I do shower everyday and find it a necessity – only once though! I can’t imagine twice! I cut my showers down along with all of my beauty care in March, BUT I will time my showers and see if I can go only half the time. Sounds like fun, Y! Can’t wait to see how others do. As always, so inspiring!

  11. I’m already working on the 50% less. I notice if I eat certain foods, I feel more icky, like I need to shower more. So my goal is to eat less of those foods, and hopefully I can go longer. Maybe even get to once every three days.

I only shave my legs once a week or every other week, and I only do my arm pits twice a week so that shortens my showers. I don’t use conditioner anymore, either. The hard thing with the cold weather, though, it that I love long, hot showers to warm up!

So I’m not good at short showers, but at least I’m showing less often! Amazing to think that every other day can cut everything in half: the amount of water, the amount of cleansing products, the frequency of washing the towels, and energy used to blow dry hair (if you do that, which I do).
